The photographs lie a little
Almost every body chain photograph online shows it worn on bare skin against a plain background, because that is the clearest way to show what the object is. It is a terrible guide to how anybody actually wears one.
A waist chain under a white shirt that shows through when you move is doing more work than the same chain worn bare. A chest drape over a plain black slip changes the whole outfit. The chain is a layer, not the outfit.
